GAS DUMP BRIGHTON OUT OF CUP BRIGHTON & HA Butters 11 1-2 BRISTOL ROVERS Thorpe 25 Walker 30 ATTENDANCE: 4,217 Brighton & Hove Albion were sent crashing out of the Carling Cup this evening, as Rovers' newly formed striker partnership of Lee Thorpe and Richard Walker did the business at the Withdean Stadium. Brighton started the match as by far he better of the two teams, and put Rovers under some concerted pressure in the early stages. Maheta Molango tried his luck with a 25-yard effort that crept just a yard or two over the crossbar, and Leon Knight went close with a bicycle kick that Kevin Miller could only watch as the ball went wide of the post. Rovers' first corner of the game saw Brighton forced to head clear off their own goal line, before almost immediately at the other end the home side took the lead after an unchallenged header from Guy Butters saw Miller beaten. Butters' goal came after the Rovers defence didn't deal with a Darren Currie corner from the left channel, and the Brighton man barely had to jump to direct the ball with relative ease beyond Miller. Molango could have doubled Brighton's lead minutes later as he was inches away from connecting with a low Knight cross, and the two Seagulls forwards combined again moments later only for the latter to see his shot blocked by Steve Elliott. Rovers scored their first goal of the evening on 25 minutes after a quick move from the back to the front line saw Brighton unable to cope. Craig Hinton found Ali Gibb who in turn found Walker, and the former Blackpool man was able to play in strike partner Thorpe who slotted the ball home past Brighton goalkeeper Michel Kuipers. Five minutes after getting themselves back on level terms, Rovers found themselves two goals to one up. A cross from Stuart Campbell was headed goalwards by Paul Trollope, and after Kuipers could only palm the ball away, Walker was able to sweep the ball home from six yards out after being played in by Gibb. Rovers noticeably grew in confidence after taking the lead, and created numerous other chances in the closing stages of the first half to pin their Championship hosts back. Gibb went close with a ferocious 30-yard drive that sailed just a couple of inches past the outstretched Kuipers' gloves and wide of the post, and Robbie Ryan and James Hunt combined well on the edge of the box before the latter saw his shot on goal blocked by a Brighton defender. The second half saw Rovers start the brighter of the two sides, with a number of shots on goal by the visitors coming within the minutes immediately following the restart. Gibb played a great low ball into the box which Butters needed to be alert to deal with, and then Thorpe played in Walker whose shot was well saved by Kuipers. Brighton came back with a Currie cross that Molango headed wide, and an Albert Jarrett left-footed drive that crept just wide of Miller's post. Knight then tried his luck with a 30-yard shot that dipped just too late as Miller watched the ball sail over his crossbar, before the Rovers goalkeeper was called into action by the same man minutes later as he made a great reaction save to prevent the Seagulls drawing level. Miller produced another fine stop as Brighton stepped up a gear, diving low to his left to push away a Currie drive. Ryan headed clear from beneath his own crossbar as Brighton continued to throw balls into the Rovers penalty box, and Elliott blocked a run from Knight as the home side began to run out of ideas. Miller made a final superb save in stoppage time as Knight turned and fired in a low shot inside the penalty area, and then just moments later the referee blew his whistle to signal the end of the game, and Rovers' sensational start to the season continued with a cup victory over a side two divisions above them.
