Post Match Recap: Orange County Blues FC vs. Saint Louis FC Post Match Recap: Orange County Blues FC 1, St. Louis FC 3 IRVINE, Calif. (April 2, 2016) – The Orange County Blues FC hosted their second game of the USL 2016 season against Western Conference newcomers, St. Louis FC on Saturday at UCI’s Anteater Stadium. It was a hard fought match with both teams creating chances, but in the end it was Saint Louis FC who was able to edge past OC Blues with a 3-1 victory. The Blues started the first half strong, creating a host of chances that tested the St. Louis defense. Their constant pressure paid off in the 24th minute when Roy Meeus’ whipped free kick found the head of Brenton Griffiths, who headed the ball home, making the score 1-0. OC Blues created another fantastic opportunity in the 27th minute when forward Trevin Caesar sprang the offside trap and ran clear in on goal, chipping the ball over St. Louis’ keeper, Ryan Thompson: however, the ball was cleared off the line at the last second by the St. Louis FC defense. St. Louis FC began to pick up the pace in the second portion of the first half. In the 30th minute, St. Louis FC was able to capitalize on a free kick as Musa struck an inch perfect free kick 20 yards out that just managed to slip by the hands of Brandon Miller. With the equalizer in place, OC Blues continued to push and challenge the opposing team, in search of their second goal of the night. The Blues found themselves playing on without goal scorer, Griffiths, after he came off the pitch with an injury and was replaced by Ryan Felix. The half ended level with the teams tied at 1-1. The second half of the match started in the same fashion as the first with the Blues on top creating chances. In the 50th minute, OC Blues were awarded a penalty kick, when the outstanding Caesar was brought down by Thompson. However St. Louis FC’s Thompson was equal to Popara’s penalty and made a fantastic save low down to his right. Both teams managed to continue to create chances but it was St. Louis who were able to convert. St. Louis FC found the back of the net in the 88th minute as Cicciarelli’s shot managed to squeak under Miller. The Blues continued to push forward as Didier Crettenand fired a shot from a free kick that just flew over the crossbar. In the remaining minutes of stoppage time, St. Louis’ Cicciarelli was once again able to find the back of the net as the Blues pushed forward to grab the equalizer, they left space in behind and Cicciarelli was able to break clear and slot home. After a very competitive game with many opportunities created, the Blues will feel aggrieved not to at least have earned a point. They fought hard until the end, but ultimately just came up short and fell 3-1. Catch the OC Blues’ next game as they take on LA Galaxy II at the StubHub Center Track & Field Stadium on Friday, April 8, at 7 p.m. PT.
