Comments :
With Aston Villa leading 2-0 after 53 minutes, the referee had to abandon the match because of crowd trouble, mostly caused by Glasgow Rangers supporters in the Holte End terrace coming onto the playing surface. Matters were not helped by some of the travelling supporters breaking into a refreshment bar at the back of the terrace and stealing as many bottles of alcohol as they could carry. When emptied, many of those bottles were thrown indiscriminately around the terrace causing panic and alarm, at which point hundreds of spectators decided they would be safer on the pitch. The trouble had been simmering throughout the first half. When Aston Villa increased their lead early in the second period, that was the cue for the trouble to go from simmer to boil.
