Following its move here from Manor Field the club name was changed to Arsenal FC in 1914 and, despite finishing only fifth in Division 2, was elected into Division 1 from Division 2 in 1920. The first match to be broadcast on radio was the 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Sheffield United played here on January 22nd, 1927. The club moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2006. |

Woolwich Arsenal FC moved from Manor Field in Plumstead ready for the start of the 1913/14 season and, in view of their new location, changed the club name to The Arsenal FC.
First known as Highbury, the ground, as built, consisted of a 9,000 seat multi-span roofed main stand on the east side with large banks of open terracing surrounding the remainder of the pitch.
The major redevelopment of the ground took place in the 1930s with the construction of the Ferrier-designed West Stand in 1932, a double decker construction with standing accommodation for 17,000 and 4,100 seats. The North Bank was roofed in 1935 and the original East Stand replaced with a similar structure to the West Stand in 1936. During this period the name of the stadium was officially changed from Highbury to Arsenal Stadium.
Wartime bombing put paid to the roof over the North Bank and, apart from its replacement in 1954, little in the way of improvements were made until the ground was substantially rebuilt in the 1990s as an all-seater stadium with the East and West Stands being thoroughly refurbished and new stands being constructed at each end. At the start of the 2005/6 season, the pitch size was 110 x 71 yards but with a capacity of only 38,548 the club moved to a new larger ground, Emirates Stadium, built on a brownfield site at nearby Ashburton Grove.
The site was subsequently redeveloped with housing, the βlistedβ East and West stands being converted into apartment blocks.
