Overall it was an open game with neither side dominating but the Wings certainly had the better chances. Luis Cumbers grabbed the winner with a sublime finish on the hour mark. In a very similar fashion to last week''s game at Park View Road against Havant & Waterlooville, the homeside started well but failed to take any of their chances. Inside three minutes goalkeeper Lee Worgan fumbled a Jack Obersteller cross at the feet of Luis Cumbers. However, unfortunately for the Wings striker, Tonbridge defender Danny Walder was able to block his resulting shot wide for a corner. Ten minutes later and there was some great build up play from Welling on the edge of the Angels box. Loick Pires did well to hold up the ball before playing in Loui Fazakerley who saw his low shot deflected inches wide. The Wings should have gone in front after 20 minutes with a golden opportunity to score. A deep high ball into the area from Fazakerley found Pires unmarked inside the six yard box. Here the midfielder somehow managed to head the ball into the ground which bounced over Worgan''s bar. Just two minutes had past when that man Fazakerley was again involved in the action. This time a first time volley from outside the box grazed the top of the bar from the winger. It was a stunning strike and the goalkeeper could do nothing but watch as it sailed agonisingly over. It wasn''t entirely one way traffic in the first-period and the visitors certainly ended the half looking the better side. Wings keeper Gareth Stewart made a great diving save five minutes before the break, tipping a deflected shot over the bar. The second-half continued in a similar vein to the first, with the Wings having the better chances but Tonbridge having more of the possession and just lacking any cutting edge in the final third. 55 minutes in and a Jamie Day free-kick on the left wing was hit deep towards the back post. After being missed by any player inside the box, the ball fell for Jack Parkinson where the captain fired a shot into the side netting. Welling finally went in front just before the hour mark and they have Luis Cumbers to thank for his calm quality finish. An excellent through pass cut the Angels defence in two and Cumbers shrugged off the challenge of Scott Kinch before dispatching the ball low past Worgan. As the game went on the Wings started to tire and some poor decision making allowed Tonbridge some great chances to equalise. Stewart continued to make decent saves and Jamie Coyle had to clear off the line as the Angels attacked in force. Yet the Wings held strong and with only minutes remaining should have really put the game to bed. A long clearance from the Welling defence was chased down magnificently by Cumbers who beat the chasing defender before playing in Pires. However, with the goal at his mercy Pires managed to poke the ball wide and in all honesty the midfielder should have had a brace this afternoon. Fortunately for the PVR faithful the Wings comfortably played out the three minutes of injury time and secured their place in the First Round Proper of the FA Trophy. Match Report by James Underwood.
