Swans suffered another setback to their play-off hopes as they were left ruing some dreadful defending in the first-half that left them three goals down after less than half an hour. Although they pulled a goal back just before the break and totally dominated the second-half they failed to get the breaks they needed against uncompromising opponents to salvage something from the match. They hit the bar, had a header cleared off the line, two goals ruled out and went close on several occasions but failed to get another breakthrough their second-half performance deserved. Swans made one change from the team that had beaten Godalming Town the previous Tuesday, Craig Dunne coming in for Jordan Cheadle, who will be out for several weeks with the leg injury he received in that match. There was a sign of the problems to come with just over a minute played when Whyteleafe’s Danny Oakins was allowed to break clear on the left, but fortunately Swans’ goalkeeper Delroy Preddie was alert to the threat and came to the edge of the box to block a shot from close range. But after ten minutes a misplaced pass was intercepted by Oakins, who played Darren Watson through an alarming gap in the visiting defence, and he slipped the ball low past Preddie from the edge of the box to put the home side ahead. Swans struggled to keep any sort of meaningful possession, and it was twenty minutes before they created a threat. Graham Harper nodded the ball in from the right, Michael Charles got it to Martin Grant, but he could not get control and he hooked his shot well over. Whyteleafe doubled their lead after 25 minutes. Oakins looked to be guilty of some pushing wide on the left, but he was allowed to drive in a strong shot that appeared to catch Preddie by surprise as it found the net just inches inside the left post. Things got worse for Swans just four minutes later when Whyteleafe were allowed to build up a move started by Kieron McCann, and when Leon Worley drove the ball across from the left of the box Adam Broomhead could only put it into his own net in his effort to clear. Swans continued to struggle to get their game going, and Josh Smith was allowed to break down the right before crossing to the unmarked Watson, who volleyed a good chance wide. As the half entered the final ten minutes Swans began to get some control and home keeper Robert O’Hara was tested for the first time, saving at his near-post when Charles drover in a free-kick from the left. Harper then sent in a half-volley as the ball came out to him, but it was straight at O’Hara. In the final minute of the first-half Charles gave Swans a lifeline, powering a fine header in off the underside of the bar as he was found at the far-post by Dunne’s cross from the right. The second-half was only two minutes old when Grant blocked an attempted clearance by Fred Fleming on the left, and then left the Whytleafe player trailing as he cut in on goal, but just as he was about to put the ball past O’Hara he lost his footing and the chance went begging. Two minutes later Matt Elverson just could not stretch enough to put the ball in at the far-post as it was played into the box from the right. Grant then almost got through as a ball was played down the middle, but O’Hara saw the threat and was able to come out and collect. Swans were now well on top and Tommy Williams was brought on for Dunne. Williams was soon sending a fine ball over from the left to find Grant close-in at the far-post, but his luck continued to be out as his effort was blocked for a corner. From Ryan Lake’s kick from the right Charles was again leaping at the far-post to send in another fine header that looked destined for the net until Watson headed the ball away from under the crossbar. Midway through the second-half Peter Barkley hooked the ball over from the left and Grant headed home, but the ball was adjudged to have brushed his arm on the way in and the goal was disallowed. Both Swans’ and Grant’s luck continued to be out when Elliott Brathwaite nodded the ball across from Williams’s free-kick, and Grant got in a strong header that sent the ball against the underside of the bar and down onto the line before it was cleared. As the match entered the last quarter of an hour Swans were in danger of leaving themselves exposed to the breakaway, and when McCann set up Watson to the left of goal he fortunately put his shot straight at Preddie. Charles was next to have a score ruled out when Grant crossed from the left to find him in the six-yard box, but the ball bounced awkwardly and brushed his hand before he put it past O’Hara. Substitute Will Jenkins had the last chance, but he put his header wide when Williams’s corner picked him out at the far-post. Swans’ Team: Delroy Preddie, Graham Harper (Ryan Adams 76’), Ryan Lake, Adam Broomhead, Matt Elverson (Will Jenkins 74’), Elliott Brathwaite, Junior Kaffo, Peter Barkley, Michael Charles, Martin Grant, Craig Dunne (Tommy Williams 60’). Subs. not used: Kevin Lock. Aaron Murphy. Scorer: Charles (45’). Whyteleafe Team: O’Hara, Aldous, R. Coleman, Fleming, Oakins, Goodchild, McCann, Smith, D. Coleman, Watson (Graham 80’), Worley (Conroy 54’). Subs. not used: Platel, McDowell, Holmes-Lewis. Scorers: Watson (10’), Oakins (25’), Broomhead, own goal (29’). Cautions: Watson, deliberate handball (23’), D. Coleman, foul (49’), O’Hara, time-wasting (70’), Goodchild, dissent (80’).
