Comments :
Having passed my Referees Examination with a 100% mark, the East Riding FA wanted me to actually referee a match. Like any 15 year-old I had very little interest in a refereeing career but when I received my fee of ten shillings which was twice my pocket money allowance I agreed to do a match the following week as well. In the end, I must have refereed or lined nearly 2000 matches over a career stretching more than 30 years.
