Another season, more forlorn hope!   Just before I had to return back to Uni for my final year, we decided to make the relatively short trip across country to Oxford.  Back then Oxford Utd seemed to be another one of our bogey teams.  We always seemed to do badly against them, so I didn't hold out much hope, although the second half of the previous season had seen big improvements on the pitch.   The journey up was pretty simple and we found plenty of parking on a side road just 15 mins walk from The Manor Ground.   It was very hard to believe that the ground had hosted top flight football in the 80s.  It was a mish-mash of various different stands and was pretty small.  Although it had bags of character with a big old-fashioned terrace with caging to the right of us, which I thought had been done away with after the Taylor Report.   One side of the ground appeared to be split into two different stands and we opted to sit in the clanky metal stand near to one of the corners, instead of endure a poor view in the pen! As I reached to pick up my programme, I actually felt it slip from my grasp.  As I looked down it had disappeared from view.  The stand had actually SWALLOWED my programme!  A crack in the metal had allowed it to disappear for ever.  My mind conjured up an image of piles upon piles of old programmes supporting the whole weight of the stand.   The game itself was notable for two things.  Scott Murray putting us 1-0 up within the first few minutes and loan signing Darren Dunning being sent off.  We won 1-0 and finally seemed to lay our Oxford Utd jinx to rest.
