Match no. 507. Not a great game but an amazing finish to extra time. With 3 minutes left Alan Kennedy scored for Liverpool with a shot that passed over the prone body of Sammy Lee on the 6-yard line. He seemed clearly offside (as the interfering with play interpretation stood at the time) but the referee, who else but Clive Thomas, awarded the goal. Then, in the last minute, Alvin Martin''s goalbound header was handled on the line by Terry McDermott (no red card for that offence in those days!) and Ray Stewart coolly sent Ray Clemence the wrong way from the penalty spot. So it finished 1-1 and went to a replay at Villa Park that Liverpool won 2-1 (the first League Cup final to be shown live on TV).
