From my journal on the date: ''I made a trip to Carrow Road for my first ever Norwich City game, a friendly versus Everton. Having lived here for three years with a half-serious interest in eventually fulfilling the 92 (visiting every league ground in the country), a few days ago I thought a visit was overdue and bought myself a single ticket, the price being about a fifth of what I pay to go to a Chelsea match, including travel. Norwich lost 4-2, going two goals down in the first half as they had their fair share of possession using their diamond system but their strikers couldn’t do anything with it when it mattered, leaving them open to the counter. Everton’s first goal was a carbon copy of the goal Robert Green conceded against the USA last month, which brought a groan from the crowd. Norwich took advantage of Everton’s lack of concentration (and their average right back, Tony Hibbert) by equalising with two goals down the left in quick succession early in the second half. Unfortunately, Everton eventually made their higher class count before seeing out the game relatively comfortably. While I enjoyed watching the steady passing of Everton’s midfield duo Mikel Arteta and Phil Neville, the Norwich number 14, Wes Hoolahan, at the tip of their diamond, seemed particularly vital to most Norwich attacks, as did their two new midfield signings Andrews Surman and Crofts, both of whom scored. The game was interesting in that it was a different crowd from what I’m usually exposed to at football matches, as I was surrounded by many parents with their children in the Jarrold Stand – sitting near people who didn’t berate their own players just for losing the ball was refreshing. The game still lacked somewhat in atmosphere, but it was only a friendly of course and by all accounts Carrow Road is usually more noisy. Perhaps I will buy a membership and go again when there’s more importance in the games – it would be nice to feel more involved with the local team, and it would offer opportunities to see teams that I wouldn’t consider usually.''
