Such a shame that this stadium will be torn down now that West Ham have won the bid to take over the Olympic Stadium after the games next year. I found it to be tight, compact, atmospheric, well-designed, individual and ''english''. It''s a ground that has developed over the decades, yes it''s a little bit tacky at the main entrance with its mock castles but it''s also impressive. It loomed up at us as we approached it from half a mile away where we had parked and by the time we reached the queues at the Pie and Eel shop (why would anyone want to eat that?!) and had walked right around the outside, it was towering over us on three sides but not where we chose to sit in the Main Stand which I remember having used at least in 1978 and possibly before on my first visit in 1975, although I actually remember nothing of the occassion then! ESPN were showing this match live and John Barnes, John Hartson and Ray Stubbs sat at a very unimpressive table at pitch side delivering who knows what to the watching audience as there was no way they could be heard over the tannoy. They must have special mics that drown out surrounding noise? Burnley looked so much improved from the previous rounds and are clearly enjoying the new Eddie Howe regime or at least they were until Thomas Hitzlsperger hit a trademark shot into their net after 20 or so minutes and they were never able to recover from it. Early in the second half West Ham stretched the lead to a gap of 4 and finished up securing us another visit to Stoke in the Quarters with a 5-1 win.
