League leaders Sunderland were good value for a 1-0 half-time lead, as Pompey showed few signs of threatening to score - something they hadn't done often enough so far that season, ensconced as they were in the bottom half of the table. The second half was a revelation as Pompey looked like a team transformed. The leaders were swept aside as Pompey scored four times without reply. The pick was an outstanding team goal finished off by a superb volley on the run by Norman Piper. Previously useless players, even Lewis, suddenly played like world-beaters. The most extraordinary turnaround I've ever seen in a match. Sunderland went on to missout on promotion by two points! Man Utd, Villa and Norwich went up. Pompey finished 17th.
