Portsmouth FC was formed in 1898 and purchased the site, in use as a market garden, for Β£4,950. The original facilities upon its opening in September 1899 included a seated stand on the south side and a cover on the north. A subsequent addition was a pavilion built on the south side, at the west end, in 1905. Major improvements were made upon joining the Football League in 1920 with the installation of a new 4,000 seat main stand on the south side and, in the years leading up to WWII a new stand was built on the north side and a cover erected at the west end.
Following the end of the war the record attendance of 51,385 was set at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Derby County (2-1) on February 26th, 1949 and Fratton Park hosted the first ever Football League match to be played under floodlights when Newcastle United visited for a Division One fixture (0-2) on February 22nd, 1956. The one major improvement undertaken in this period was the construction of a concrete two-tier stand at the west end but this only survived until 1988 when it was demolished due to the rapid deterioration of the material.
The stadium was refurbished and partially rebuilt during the 1990s with the installation of seats throughout the ground plus an extension to the roof on the north stand and the construction of a new 4,550 seat stand at the west end. The all-seater capacity at the start of season 2007/8 was 20,288 and the pitch size 114 x 72 yards. In 2005 plans were in hand to rotate the ground through 90o and rebuild it but by 2007 the decision had been taken to relocate.
