Hull City FC had hoped to use the
Boulevard Ground of Hull RLFC as their home ground when they joined the Football League in 1905 but at the last moment the Rugby League authorities ordered that no paid admission could be taken at the ground for Association Football games and they had to utilize
The Circle. Within a few months the Rugby League relented and the club was able to use the
Boulevard Ground for occasional matches, the first one being switched in anticipation of a larger gate.
