Major alterations took place following the donation of the ground to the club from the landowners in 1922. In the 1920s the end terraces were rebuilt and expanded (eliminating the oval shape) a new main stand constructed on the north side and a 500 seat open stand (subsequently roofed) built on the south side alongside the existing stand which was installed with 2,000 seats. In the wake of these improvements the nominal capacity was set at 41,600 and just before the outbreak of WWII a new stand was opened at the west end.

 

Following the end of the war, the cover over the east end was destroyed in a gale but it was not until after the record attendance of 35,000 was attained at the FA Cup 3rd Round tie v. Bolton Wanderers  (1-1) on January 9th, 1960 that the roof was replaced. Although, following safety measures in the 1980s, the capacity was reduced with the demolition of the small stand on the south side and near-closure of both the main and west stands, the ground was considerably improved during the 1990s with refurbishment of the aforementioned main and west stands and construction of new inter-connected stands on the east and south sides. The all-seater capacity at the start of season 2007/8 was 11,669 and the pitch size 112 x 72 yards.
