GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Located in Prittlewell, some one mile north of Southend town centre, Southend United FC originally moved in in 1906. The basic facilities included a seated grandstand and flat standing areas around the pitch. The club moved out to The Kursaal in 1915 and the site was exploited for its deposits of sand and gravel resulting in a ground level drop of some 50ft by the time that the club returned here in 1953.

When Roots Hall opened in 1955 a main stand had been constructed on the east side, covers erected on the west side and at the north end and some concrete terracing installed around the ground. The south end was extended with additional concrete terracing in 1960 and, following the extension of the main stand in 1967, the record attendance of 31,090 was set at the FA Cup 3rd Round tie v. Liverpool (0-0) on January 10th, 1979.
After part of the south end was sold for redevelopment in 1988, further alterations included the installation of seating at the north end, roof extensions and seating on the west side and construction of a new 2,083 seat two-tier stand at the south end. The all-seat capacity at the start of the 2007/8 season was 12,392 and the pitch size 110 x 74 yards.

Food & drink
The Railway Tavern on East Street in Prittlewell is 100 yards from the station just walk up the station approach and onto East Street ideally placed next to the railway station then the Tavern does good ale, a big bar split into two with plenty of space. Landlord was helpful and chatty and the staff well attended. I'd recommend a stop off.
If driving
From M25 take Junction 29 and follow the A127 to Southend. Continue towards the town centre, through the lights near to the Bell Pub. At the next roundabout turn right take the third exit into Victoria Avenue. The ground is on the right just past the next traffic lights. If you turn right into Fairfax Drive as you reach the ground, this will put you behind the away end where there is plenty of street parking to be found. Otherwise there is a car park at the ground, or there is the Southend High School on Prittlewell Chase which is the first right as you come down Fairfax Drive and 100 yards on the right also offers car parking for Β£5 per car.
Public transport
The closest station to the ground is Prittlewell, about a five minute walk away. It is served by trains from London Liverpool Street. As you exit the station turn right into East Street, you will then come to a crossroads with traffic lights. On your right is the 'Fish House, turn right past the church cross the road then walk 100 yards and the ground is tucked away on your left.
