GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Sited within Penydarren Park, the venue opened in 1904 for cycling and athletics and it was not until the formation of Merthyr Town FC in 1908 that it was revamped with a football pitch surrounded by an oval running track. The facilities originally included a small timber seated grandstand on the south side with embankments around the remainder of the arena and later improvements included the installation of a paddock in front of the grandstand and the construction of a covered enclosure on the opposite side. Merthyr Town folded in 1934 and the ground was used for greyhound racing for a while but in 1945 a re-formed Merthyr Tydfil FC took up residence and it is still their home ground today. It has regularly been used as the venue for Under-21 Internationals and as recently as September 9th, 2003 hosted the match between Wales and Finland (0-0) before a crowd of 1,311.
