GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Also known as the Ynys Stadium, the site was first used in 1893 by Aberdare Town FC, predecessor of Aberdare Athletic.

Located to the east of the town, the ground initially possessed few facilities but by 1920 a narrow grandstand had been constructed on the south side and the pitch was circumvented by a cycle track. Aberdare Town FC was formed in 1920 and, with the hope of Football League membership, the grandstand was rebuilt, and subsequently extended, the cycle track dispensed with and embankments constructed behind both goals.

The club was elected to the League in 1921 and the all-time attendance record of 22,584 set at the Wales v. Scotland Schoolboys International on May 14th, 1921. Aberdare Athletic, failed to gain re-election in 1927 and vacated the Athletic Ground in 1934. A new Sports Centre was subsequently established on the site.
