GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
This venue, originally known as The Old Peacock Ground and first used by Holbeck RLFC in 1896, was acquired by Leeds City FC in 1904. The facilities, at this point, consisted of stands on both sides of the pitch but within one year these had been demolished and a new 5,000 seat stand constructed on the south side with banking provided around the other three sides. The pitch was 115 x 73 yards and the potential capacity of the stadium was 22,000.

In 1906 an extra four acres of land at the north end of the site was purchased enabling the ground to be turned through 90o, the former main stand now occupied the south end, and a new main stand was built on the west side. The pitch measured 125 x 85 yards and additional banking raised the nominal capacity of the ground to 45,000. Leeds City FC folded in 1919 and the ground was taken over by Yorkshire Amateur FC, an amateur club, for a short while until Leeds United FC was formed.
Considerable alterations were made up to WWII with the replacement of the stand at the south end, extension of the roof over the paddock on the west side, expansion of the north end and enlargement and covering of the east side.

The main stand burned down in 1956 and was replaced with a 4,000 seat stand fronted by a paddock with standing accommodation for 6,000 but it was not until after the record attendance of 59,892 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round Replay v. Sunderland (1-1) on March 15th, 1967 that the major post war re-development of the ground took place. In 1968 the north end terrace was removed and a new propped cantilever stand built some 60 feet further north allowing for the later re-siting of the pitch to accommodate a new propped cantilever stand at the south end which was subsequently completed in 1974. During this period stands were also constructed in the north east, northwest and south west corners but it was not until 1991 that the south east corner was similarly treated.

The final development came in the 1990s with the construction of a 17,000 seat stand on the east side and conversion of all standing areas to seating giving a capacity of 40,296 at the start of the 2007/8 season. The pitch size was 117 x 76 yards.
