Located to the south west of the town centre, The Paradise Ground occupied a field on the east side of the Middlesbrough Union Workhouse, at the rear of Oldgate Farm. When it was first used in 1889 no covered accommodation was provided but improvements were gradually made until small covered stands had been built on three sides of the ground and some uncovered seating installed. Changing facilities were provided at the County Hotel, some distance away, which necessitated the provision of transport for players and officials.
The record attendance of 14,000 was established on February 18th, 1893 when Preston North End FC visited for an FA Cup 3rd Round match (2-2). Middlesbrough Ironopolis FC folded in 1894 and the northwest corner of The Paradise Ground was used for part of the site of Middlesbrough FCβs Ayresome Park which opened in 1903. The remainder of the site was later occupied by houses on the north side of Clive Road.
