GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
The ground was opened by the Wigan Trotting & Athletic Grounds Co. on August 18th, 1897 with an athletics meeting. The football pitch was surrounded by trotting and cycle tracks and standing accommodation was provided by grass and cinder embankments at each end. A variety of football clubs (and Wigan RLFC for one season) used the venue before Wigan Borough FC moved in on their formation in 1920.

In the 1920s a 2,000 seat main stand was built on the south side and covers installed on the north side and at the west end before the record attendance of 30,611 was set at the Wigan Borough v. Sheffield Wednesday FA Cup 3rd Round tie (1-3) on January 12th, 1929. Wigan Borough FC folded in 1931 to be replaced in the following year by Wigan Athletic FC who bought the ground for Β£2,850.
No further alterations took place until a new main stand was built in 1954 (following a fire in 1953) and a cover erected at the west end in 1972 but removed four years later as it restricted the number of spectators who could occupy the terracing. The club moved to the JJB Stadium in 1999 and the ground was demolished and the site utilized for housing.
