Located to the south of the city centre and east of Queenβs Drive, Notts County FC first played on the Castle Cricket Ground in 1880 but only used it intermittently for Football League matches after their move to Trent Bridge. The primary use of the venue was for cricket and had few facilities for players and spectators other than a pavilion at the north end of the ground.
In the 1890s, the area to the immediate west of the ground was acquired by the Great Central Railway for the line into Victoria Station and the site of Arkwright Street Engine Shed whilst the Castle Cricket Ground was utilized for housing.
