Sited west of the town centre, the ground was constructed along the east side of The Circle and opened in 1906. A grandstand was built on the west side and covered standing accommodation provided on the north and part of the east sides. The original soil embankments were later improved with concrete terracing and the first grandstand, which only lasted until 1911 when it was destroyed by a fire, was replaced by a 4,000 seat covered structure.

The record attendance of 32,930 was set at the FA Cup 6th Round Replay v. Newcastle United (1-0) on March 6th, 1930. The ground suffered from considerable bomb damage during WWII and by the commencement of League Football in 1946 the first team had moved on to Boothferry Park. The junior teams continued to utilize the venue until 1965 when British Railways constructed a loop line across the ground.
