Located to the east of the town centre, The Chuckery consisted of a number of fields and both Walsall Town FC and Walsall Swifts FC had pitches here before they amalgamated as Walsall Town Swifts in 1888 and used the βTownβ pitch.
The highest attendance at the ground was 7,000 recorded at the Walsall Town FC v. Aston Villa (0-5) FA Cup 1st Round tie on October 17th, 1885 and at a Friendly Match between Walsall Town Swifts and West Bromwich Albion on September 24th, 1888.
Walsall Town Swifts moved to West Bromwich Road in 1893 and The Chuckery was subsequently redeveloped for housing.
The first match on the βTownβ ground had probably been Walsall Town v. Rushall Rovers (2-3) on October 3rd, 1874 and until 1886 it had access to the only facility available, the Walsall Cricket Club pavilion in the adjacent field. Following a dispute with the cricket club committee this facility was withdrawn and Walsall Town FC built a grandstand with βtwo comfortable rooms with fires and washing facilitiesβ. This was opened on November 13th, 1886 for an FA Cup 1st Rd Replay v. Derby St Luke's (6-1) but the precise location of this and the pitch within the field is not known.
