GROUND HISTORY

Located on the south side of Ayresome Street and partially sited on the north west corner of the Paradise Ground, the former home of Middlesbrough Ironopolis FC, Middlesbrough FC moved here from Linthorpe Road in 1903. It had a capacity of 40,000 and was well-appointed for the time, with a new full length stand constructed on the north side and the grandstand from Linthorpe Road re-erected on the south.
The ground was gradually improved, with replacement of the South Stand, construction of concrete terraces and covering of the west end bringing the capacity up to 54,000. It was subsequently refurbished to host some of the Group 4 World Cup matches in 1966 involving roofing of the east end and the installation of an additional 7,600 seats. Middlesbrough FC moved out to the Riverside Stadium in 1995 and the ground was demolished.
