Following its move here from Manor Field the club name was changed to Arsenal FC in 1914 and, despite finishing only fifth in Division 2, was elected into Division 1 from Division 2 in 1920. The first match to be broadcast on radio was the 1-1 draw between Arsenal and Sheffield United played here on January 22nd, 1927. The club moved to the Emirates Stadium in 2006.

The club was elected into the Football League Division 2 in 1893 as Woolwich Arsenal FC. The ground was closed for five weeks following a crowd disturbance at the Burton Wanderers fixture on January 26th, 1895 and home games were played at Priestfield Road and The Lyttelton Ground. In 1913 the decision was taken to re-locate to Islington, some ten miles away, and establish Highbury Stadium.

The Invicta Ground saw a marked change in football in the South of England when Arsenal became the first Southern club to go professional in 1891. The ground itself was probably the best in the south at that time with a grandstand and terracing surrounding a decent pitch. The club was shunned by other Southern clubs but their application to join the League in 1893 was successful and they never looked back. Unfortunately, the landord of the Invicta Ground increased the rent from Ł200 to Ł350, resulting in the club moving back to Manor Field, which they bought for Ł4,000. Their last game at the Invicta was on 29th April 1893 when they lost 1-0 to Stoke City.

Arsenal's first spell at Manor Field (later named Manor Ground) only lasted for one season. Although an improvement on the Sportsman's Ground it was still very basic, and when an estimated 10,000 fans turned up for the London Charity Cup final on 5th April 1889 it was clear the club would need to find a proper ground. At this time they were borrowing wagons from the barracks for fans to stand on and using the Railway Tavern as changing rooms. They played their last game here on 3rd May 1889.

Arsenal leased this former pig farm until the end of the 1887/88 season when they moved next door to Manor Field. Both were on the edges of Plumstead Marshes but the Sportsman's Ground suffered particularly badly from waterlogging. Arsenal were by now attracting several thousands fans but the Ground offered no facilities and may not even have been fully enclosed.

This was Arsenal's first ground, although it was just a pitch marked out on the Common with goalposts carried from a local back-garden. Three local pubs were used as changing rooms and the ever ambitious Arsenal were pretty soon on the look-out for a proper ground. Only 5 games were played on the Common, which was badly rutted due to the Royal Artillery exercising their horses on it. Arsenal moved to the Sportsman''s Ground at the end of the 1886/87 season.
