GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Mansfield Town FC moved from The Prairie to the Field Mill Ground in 1919. The site had been used as a cricket ground as early as 1840 and was first used for football by Greenhalgh FC in 1861. A narrow 1,600 seat stand was constructed along the west side in 1922, and alterations in 1928 included the installation of a cover on the east side and the construction of an oval track for greyhound racing.
Following the club’s election to the Football League in 1931, greyhound racing was dispensed with and a new stand built on the east side, utilizing seating from the west stand which reverted to standing accommodation.

After the club purchased the ground and adjacent allotments in 1947, the record attendance of 24,467 was set six years later at the FA Cup 3rd Round tie v. Nottingham Forest  (0-1) on January 10th, 1953. A cover was installed at the north end in 1956 and a 2,400 seat grandstand, purchased from the Hurst Park Racecourse opened on the west side in 1966.

The ground was further improved in 2000/1 when 2,200 seat stands were constructed at each end of the ground and the main stand on the west side rebuilt giving an all-seater capacity of 9,990 at the start of the 2007/8 season. The pitch size was 115 x 72 yards.
