GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

Newport County FC first used Somerton Park on their formation in 1912. Details of the facilities at this time are not known but, by the time that it was taken over by the Cardiff Arms Park Greyhound Racing Company in 1931 a main stand had been built on the west side and cover erected over the south end.

Major alterations subsequently took place with the installation of a greyhound racing track, a new main stand on the east side and alterations to the banking. At the same time, the original stand was converted into a glass fronted social club overlooking the pitch.
In the 1960s the racing track was utilized for speedway and, within twenty years, the ground had been sold to the council, bought by the club and re-sold to the council before Newport County FC were relegated to the Football Conference in 1988. The club subsequently folded and although it re-formed some years later the ground was demolished in 1993 and the site used for housing.
