GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"

The ground, on the east side of the town, was opened by the Northamptonshire County Cricket & Recreation Grounds Ltd in 1885 and was first used by Northampton Town FC in 1897. The football pitch was sited to the north of the cricket square and the club used the cricket pavilion on the south side of the ground until 1907 when a small stand and terrace were constructed on the north side.

A replacement 2,000 seat main stand was constructed in 1924 (and rebuilt in 1930 following a fire) whilst small terraces, at each end of the pitch, were subsequently installed. Throughout the years duckboards provided a limited amount of standing accommodation on the south side of the pitch.
Following WWII a cover was built over the west end, the east end was extended in 1965 and although the main stand was refurbished in 1980 it was condemned in 1985 and partially demolished leaving an uncovered paddock. At the same time part of the east end terracing was closed and the only alterations prior to Northampton Town’s departure to Sixfields Stadium in 1994 were the provision of a temporary 400 seat stand in the paddock and installation of a new cover at the west end.

The venue is still in use as the home ground of Northamptonshire CCC.
