| When Ashington FC moved here in 1909 it was known as the Station Road Ground and was not re-named until 1914. Initially there were virtually no facilities but by 1921 a 1,000 seat grandstand had been built on the north side which, following their entry into the Football League that year, was refurbished. At the same time concrete terracing was introduced around the other three sides but no covered accommodation was provided for standing spectators.
The club failed to gain re-election in 1929 and the ground remained unchanged until the 1940s when it was substantially altered to facilitate greyhound racing, and subsequently speedway and stock car racing as well as football. The record attendance for a football match, of 13,199 was set at the FA Cup 2nd Round tie v. Rochdale (1-2) on December 9th, 1950 and Portland Park continued in use as the home ground for Ashington FC until 2007 when the owners of the site, Wansbeck Council, sold it for redevelopment as an ASDA superstore. Part of the proceeds of the sale were used to create a new venue for the club at Hirst Welfare.
