Match no. 454. West Ham needed a win to at least stay in contention for promotion and took an early lead through Billy Bonds, significantly helped by a clear handball in the build-up. Wrexham goalie Dai Davies was so incensed by this that he grabbed referee Ken Baker and was promptly sent-off. However Hammers could not make this advantage count and Wrexham equalised in the second-half. West Ham eventually finished fifth, six points off promotion, with Crystal Palace, Brighton and Stoke City going up.
