Watford had finished as runners up in the league the previous May and Coventry had just avoided relegation. In addition Coventry had lost their chairman,manager and nine of their regular first team squad. New manager Bobby Gould had a handful of lower league signings , promoted youngsters and recalled loan players but thanks to 2 own goals they managed to produce a big shock on the opening day of the new season.
