Now I''m not one to moan (much) but there are certain aspects of modern football which really annoy me, one of which is the current attitude of clubs towards the domestic cup games. From the Premier League right through to League Two many clubs now field weakened or second string teams. These games are seen by the clubs as a good opportunity to blood some of the younger players. Not too many weeks back Leicester City fielded a much changed team to play a much changed Manchester City team in the League Cup Quarter Finals. Why? Leicester City, this season, are not likely to be relegated nor are they likely to sneak into the top six to disturb the current status quo. So with the opportunity to reach a Wembley final, maybe even win the cup, why field a team of youngsters? The clubs say that want to finish as high as possible, or preserve their status in the (enter league here). Understandable, but what about the punters, the fans, the folk who put their hearts and money into the team that they love? Personally I''d rather see my team have a good go in the cup competitions than finish ninth. Ok if they get knocked out then focus on finishing as high as possible but in the meantime think of the fans. Unfortunately, as in many walks of life these days, it seems the paying public in football no longer count. It is just about the money for many clubs. Some need to do it to survive so you can''t criticise that too much. But if recent reports are to be believed there are some clubs, and we can probably name them, who could play to empty stadiums and still get more money than the rest of the leagues put together. Last weekend the Baggies went to the Amex to play Brighton in the FA Cup. I was unable to attend but a weakened team surprisingly managed a commendable 0-0 draw, albeit against a weakened Brighton. I secured my £10 (bargain. Well done Albion) ticket for this replay in the hope that as Brighton were struggling to retain their Premier League status the Baggies might put out a decent, fairly experienced team. Sadly that wasn''t the case. Albion went ahead with 13 minutes left with a most bizarre goal from Kyle Bartley, who whilst more or less standing off the pitch by the post tapped in a cross which seemed to be going out of play. Even the defender walked away bamboozled. A few minutes later Brighton, following a mistake from Bartley, equalised. Disappointment for the Baggies. Chris Hughton brought on old head Glenn Murray for extra time, who scored two goals to win the tie. This match annoyed me for days after. Ok so Albion lost. But i believe that had they fielded a more experienced team, even if it was only for the first half, or even if it was just to satisfy the less than 9,000 fans who came to see some effort put in, maybe even take the tie to penalties, then I think they could have beaten the opposition tonight. Brighton now have a home tie v Derby County in the next round. I love the FA Cup so tonight was disappointing. Disappointing result and disappointing team selection. Next season I may have to give it a miss.
