A midweek cup game for £10? A bargain not to be turned down. I like cup games, especially under the floodlights. The fact you can (potentially) see a result in the night as opposed to the week to week marathon of the League is exciting. Unfortunately a crowd of just over 10,000, at least 2000 plus were Luton fans, turned up to watch this dreary bore-fest. Most of the entertainment came from listening to the banter between the two sets of fans in the Smethwick. West Brom left the big guns Livermore, Gayle and Rodriguez on the bench and were unused by the end of the game. At this first stage of the competition I feel the full team should have been out on the pitch to win the game as early as possible and then replace the major players at half time. I can''t comment on the Luton team as I don''t know their normal starting eleven but to be fair to them they certainly looked up for the battle and stifled West Brom at every opportunity. When they lost possession they always looked to win the ball back, usually with four or five players gathered around a listless looking Baggie. Their passing was good too. West Brom however looked to have gone back into Pulis/ Pardew mode with overhit/ underhit passes, corners which were too long or too high, no great movement off the ball and aimless runs into the box. Chances were far and few for both teams with Robson-Kanu having two headers which sailed well wide. Eventually Baggies broke the deadlock when a Luton clearance ricocheted off Harvey Barnes and fell to Olly Burke who ran through and played it very nicely under the keeper into the net. The Hawthorns went home happy to have won but having seen the performances so far, Baggies need to improve greatly if they are to progress both in the Championship and the League Cup. Next up in the League is a home game v QPR. Next up in the cup is a home tie against Mansfield Town.
