West Ham led 3-0 at half-time before Stoke pulled it back to 3-3 and almost won it in the last minute when a shot by Harry Burrows hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down and out with Stoke players claiming in vain that it had crossed the line. Remarkably, in the same fixture almost exactly 2 years before, on 7.10.67, Stoke did come from 3-0 down to win 4-3 (see match no. 53).
