A brilliant convergence day out:- Early start from Whitchurch (07:07) with Charlie and Matt. Trains good (despite not having any coffee service in first class even though our tickets were cheaper than standard class) and we were in Cleethorpes bob on time. A very gentle amble along the sea front had us licking the widow at hospitality a full 20 minutes too early. But once we got in (precisely on their time schedule) it was wonderful. Lovely (Lawrie McMenemy) lounge with view across the pitch, all staff friendly and efficient and the food was excellent. The drink flowed liberally too. Great seat high in the main stand and sat next to club legend Dave Worthington and his (much younger) sister who was a class act and jolly friendly. Great game too going two up before being pegged back to two all only for a screaming beautiful magnificent free kick in the 94th minute to win it. Screamed like a girl !!! Back to lounge for a couple more then on to the station for a swifty before trains (both on time) home catching a lengthy nap on the way. Then taxi back home to sleep with a big smile on my face. I love Grimsby. MY FIRST VISIT 29-September-2018 League Two vs Morecombe 1-2 Attendance: 3,972 A beautiful sunny late September day, perfect for a train ride across the Pennines. Glorious. 2.5 hours from Stockport to Cleethorpes but it seemed to pass in a flash. Then stepping out of the train almost directly onto the promenade for a gentle half hour amble along the sea front to the footbridge over to Blundell Park. I was already a little bit in love with the place before I got there, all wrapped up in cosy nostalgic blankets as I negotiated the narrow terraced streets to the ground that sat like a huge cuckoo in the nest of houses. This place is proper ''old school'' and a wonderful throw back. I''d deliberately booked a seat high in the upper tier of the Young''s Stand and wasn''t disappointed. A good view of the pitch (apart from a roof support in the middle of the left goal) but - even better - a view out across the sea beyond and the boats, ferries and distant wind farm. The game was about what I''d expect for an early season 6-pointer at the bottom of League 2 but still way way better than my recent viewing in the Vanarama National League. And the crowd of committed locals packed around me (the seats were VERY narrow) groaned in unison at the missed passes and lost possessions. I engaged in pleasant conversation with both my neighbours who were friendly, knowledgeable, (very unusually) sensibly objective. I felt so sorry for them, having to watch this every week. And they are really going to struggle to stay up. Even when they went ahead (with their first goal for six games) there was a sense of inevitability that they would eventually lose. And they did. Then for me it was a four and a half hour journey home. The first leg back to Stockport was okay with the sun setting across the Lincolnshire flat lands (and a bride in full regalia on the train), but then my second train was cancelled so I had to wait for a later one. Not too bad though and eventually home safe after a truly excellent day out. I hope Blundell Park is still there when Charlie is ready to do a convergence match. I''d love to take here to what is now firmly one of my favourite grounds.
