Another convergence ground for Charlie and doing it in League One Nottinghamshire style with hospo. First day back in UK for me after nearly 6 weeks in Tenerife (suffering pretty poor weather) but sun shining down on England and us. Three trains (all spot on time) to Mansfield and a gentle easy 10 minutes walk to the ground. Straight into the (somewhat ratty) lounge for a first beer (from horrifically disorganised bar staff). Very small table for 12 people but we managed and the food was really good as was the company around the table. Good seats and a great game considering neither team had anything to play for. Very enjoyable watch but so glad we''d taken coats as it got really chilly when out of the sun. A few drinks after then back to the station and yet more on-time trains. At Nottingham we converged with Wrexham fans heading home from Lincoln and all in fancy dress (traffic cones, jockeys an, horses and one Mexican wrestler). Very fun (and loud) bunch making the journey back to Crewe pass in a flash of noise and amusement. Another very good and enjoyable day out. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ First time – 5th May 2018 versus Crawley Town in League 2 1-1 in front of 4,374 crowd Three trains from Crewe (via Derby and Nottingham) on a glorious warm sunny summer''s day. And every leg on time. Then a gentle 10 minutes walk to the ground. So easy. Nice ground with double-decker stand on one side and fit for purpose stands on the other three. All well maintained and painted and with famous football quotes on printed boards here there and everywhere. My favourite was Bill Shankley''s, the problem with referees is that they know the rules but not the game. Mansfield needed to win and have Lincoln lose to get into the play-offs and very quickly news came through that Lincoln were indeed losing. Unfortunately, very soon after, so were Mansfield. In fact they were so abysmal in the first half the manager made two substitutions after less than half an hour. It made no difference. But in the second half it all changed. Mansfield went on the attack and they were relentless creating chance after chance. But the finishing was somewhere between diabolical and laughable - the worst a miss from one yard in the middle of an open goal. We in the crowd were speechless, just looking at each other, silent, open mouthed. At last ‘we’ scored only for news to come through seemingly minutes later than Lincoln too had equalised. The deflation was immense and, although the team continued to press for a winner - still hoping - it was not to be. For me all that remained was three trains back to Crewe (again all spot on time) as the sun slowly set and a short drive home in Veerle’s Volvo with the top down. Lovely lovely day.
