Report of match 26th January 2013 Rotherham 1-3 Bristol Rovers- Report. Pirates win to climb off the bottom Bristol Rovers recorded an emphatic 3-1 victory over 10-man Rotherham to move off the foot of npower League Two. The hundreds of Millers fans who helped clear the snow off the pitch spent the final minutes of the first half with their head in their hands as new signing Claude Davis endured a nightmare debut. The central defender was sent off for two yellow cards in first-half added time having given away the penalty that handed Rovers the lead. Neither side had managed a shot on target until Davis bundled over Rovers debutant Ryan Brunt and Lee Brown easily beat Andy Warrington from the spot. Davis, already booked in the 9th minute, then brought Brunt down on the edge of the area and received his marching orders. Worse was to follow for the home side. 18-year-old substitute Ellis Harrison doubled Rovers'' advantage three minutes after his introduction with a solo run down the left which saw him beat off two defenders before sliding the ball home. And then in the 61st minute Joe Anyinsah repeated the process down the right before beating Warrington with a powerful drive. It was left to substitute David Noble, a former Bristol City player, to restore a little Rotherham pride in the 73rd minute with his first touch of the ball - a 25-yard power drive - but many of the home fans had already gone. Up at 6.00, checked if the forecast snow had settled overnight. It hadn''t snowed.So left at 6.35 with patches of compressed snow making the pavement slippery. Caught 352 in Cameron Road, which came along as I got to a bus stop. At Bromley South got 6.50, delayed by 6 mins (375813),fast to Vic, tube to St Pancras arr 7.30. The 7.55 for Sheffield (222013) left on time, and the sun came up over snowy fields as we went North. Only stops Leicester, Derby & Chesterfield arr Sheffield 10.08. My next train the 10.11 to Doncaster, from the adjacent platform, was 8 mins late (185148) and dropped me at 10.40. I should mention that this trip was originally intended for Barnsley, but they qualified for the 4th round of the Cup and drawn away, so had to utilise the train ticket elsewhere and fortunately Rotherham was close. The Donny bus and train stations are adjacent, so checked for 22 bus to Tickhill leaving 11.05. loads of slushy snow around as they''d had a heavy fall overnight. 22 min journey south of Donny, at Tickhill lady got off with me and showed me where to find St Mary''s church, pointing out amenities as we go. Large, plain interior the tombs hidden by builders barriers. Took photos and then bought food from local bakery before returning to Doncaster on the 12.07 bus. On to the train station and got talking to 2 Rotherham fans, a father my age and his 40''s son. We chatted on the 13.04 (144013) to Rotherham, the son having done 22years in the RAF on guidance and ATC projects. We walked to the ground together and they pointed out the old ground Millmore a short distance away. Bought my £14 Main stand ticket and £3 prog, and found my ''pals'' in the bar and joined them for a couple of John Smiths, £3 a pint! £4 at Fulham. The Main stand is very steep but gives a good view, care must be taken going down, handrails would be useful. My ''pals'' tell me the town has benefitted from the new ground, more fans attending, pubs fuller. I sit 4 rows from the top next to another friendly Yorkshireman who is interested in my quest and church visiting, so we get on well. It turns out when talking to my ''pals'' the son had got married at Tickhill church. Before the game a pipe band marched along the touchline to applause from all. I do like Rotherhams colours, similar to Arsenal''s. The Millers try to play football, but lack penetration in the box. Bristol get a penalty on 43 mins, then new boy Claude Davis (formerly at Crawley), gets a second yellow, and is sent off just before half time. Uphill struggle in second half and while Rotherham press, Bristol get 2 good breakaway goals. A fine 25 yarder on the 73 min pulled one back, but that was it and as I started to feel the chill I was greatful to get on the move again.
