With City riding high in the table, this was a must-win game against struggling Southampton, to keep our dream of Premiership football alive. I had planned the whole journey.  I was to leave my Middlesex home.  Get a leisurely fried breakfast.  Catch the train to Clapham Junction and then catch another train to Southampton where I would meet my Dad.   Of course, as is always the way with the best laid plans, this didn't quite happen.   The fried breakfast was fine but as I walked down the steps of the station I noticed 2 trains sat silently on the platforms.  The guard had only sketchy information but the crux of the matter was a fire at Waterloo had knocked out the entire power to the whole of the railways in SW London.  I reformulated a plan that I was going to try and make my way to Central London and weigh up my options.  Howvere the bus stops for Central London were rammed, so instead I hastily headed in the opposite direction and ended up in Surbiton. Unfortunately the situation was no different and I could get no further.  I had a long hard think about how important I felt the match was.  After 10 seconds I called for a taxi.  "£120 to Southampton mate."  So I agreed and travelled down in comfort and style...well, rather expensive comfort and style and was dropped off outside the ground about 2 hours before kick off. As I had bought drinks for the train, I was forced to finish these next to a burger stand.   I then had a quick look round the outside of the stadium and was stopped by a member of staff doing a travel survey.  I had to laugh when I told him I'd travelled from London and then looked at his bemused face when In told him I had arrived by taxi!   Finally I made my way into the stadium.  Again, much like the Madjeski and Walkers Stadium before it, St Mary's was impressive but was just very sterile indeed.  1 large tier all the way around the stadium.  Absolutely nothing about the place inspired the soul!  We were situated quite high up in the corner and end section that had been allocated to City's large travelling support.  Southampton's support to the left-hand side were very vociferous and were continually giving it the Big 'un to the City fans.   The match itself was truly dire.  City were dismal and it was no surprise when we went 1 down followed by a 2nd, sparking fights amongst fellow city fans towards the back of the stand.  I couldn't quite believe I had paid that taxi fare!   On the way out the police tried their best to block our way, but the pressure from the crowd behind us broke us through the flimsy flourescent yellow line.  I headed with the bulk of the City supporters towards the station with a heavy police presence, however I made my way to the opposite platform for London.  Thankfully the trains were running again!
