Bristol Rovers 1-1 Watford (4-2 on penalties) Bristol Rovers progressed to the Carling Cup second round after a 4-2 penalty shoot-out victory over Watford. Mustapha Carayol scored the winning kick after Carl Dickinson and John Eustace saw Rovers keeper Scott Bevan save their penalties. Watford went ahead inside two minutes when Marvin Sordell converted Craig Forsyth''s cross but Matt Harrold soon levelled with a superb 25-yard shot. Both sides hit the woodwork before the tie was settled by penalties. Watford had the better scoring opportunities in normal play and striker Troy Deeney could have had a first-half hat-trick. He should have scored on 20 minutes when put through by Sordell, but Bevan came to Rovers''s rescue. Deeney was denied twice more by Bevan before the break and the Rovers goalkeeper was the clear man-of-the-match. Watford twice struck the woodwork through shots from David Mirfin and Eustace, while Jo Kuffour saw a first-half effort deflected up on to the crossbar. League Two Rovers contributed fully to an absorbing cup tie but Watford boss Sean Dyche will feel his side should have won on the balance of play. Paul Buckle''s team will now visit Leyton Orient in round two.
