Bristol Rovers FC was forced to move out permanently from Eastville Stadium and stayed here until they moved back to Bristol to groundshare with Bristol RUFC at The Memorial Ground. Due to potential crowd problems the fixture v. Swindon Town on April 11th, 1987 was moved to Ashton Gate. The new ground was not ready for the start of the 1996/7 season and the first home game of that season was played here v. Peterborough United. During this period the club was also involved in a Football League Play Off Match at the neutral venue of Wembley Stadium.
