The club was a founder member of the Football League Division 3 [N] in 1921 as Hartlepools United. The name was changed to Hartlepool in 1968 and to Hartlepool United in 1977. The club was also involved in a Football League Play Off Match at the neutral venue of the Millennium Stadium. The League game v. New Brighton (3-0) on March 15th, 1947 featured the appearance of the oldest player to take part in a competitive match in England when New Brightonβs manager Neil McBain, at the age of 52 years and 4 months, had to play as an emergency goalkeeper.
