GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Newton Heath L&YR FC was formed by workers at the Carriage & Wagon Works in 1878 and they used an unenclosed area of waste land, on the opposite side of North Road to their place of employment, for the football pitch. Some improvements had been made by the time that they joined the Football League, as Newton Heath FC, in 1892. The ground had been enclosed, a 1,000 seat stand installed and a pavilion constructed at the west end of the site but there were no facilities for standing spectators. The actual orientation of the pitch, shown in the map above, has been assumed but is the probable location, given the disposition of the footpaths. The club moved to Bank Street [then known as Bank Lane] in 1893 and the venue continued in use as a sports ground. In 2003 the site was taken over for use as Moston Brook High School.
