During WWII the city of Birmingham suffered from more bombing raids than any other outside of London and it was no surprise that the ground experienced considerable bomb damage (the demise of the main stand being assisted in 1942 by the inadvertent use of petrol, rather than water, to put out a small fire). Attempts were made to purchase the grandstand from the Royal Gymnasium Ground in Edinburgh but this was sold to Leith Athletic FC for £2,000 in 1947 and re-erected at Old Meadowbank. The south side was re-roofed in 1947 and, in the 1950s, a new main stand constructed on the north side and cover erected at the east end. A new stand was opened at the west end in 1964 and, apart from the installation of seats in the paddocks in front of the stands no further alterations took place until the 1990s.

In 1994 the terracing on the south side and at the east end was removed and replaced with two continuous cantilever roofed all seat stands and, in 2000, a two-tier all-seat stand was opened at the west end giving an all-seat capacity of 30.016 by the start of the 2007/8 season. During the 2006/7 season the pitch deteriorated badly and became potentially dangerous. To rectify this, the laying of a new surface commenced on January 7th, 2007 but unexpected adverse weather conditions led to it being unready for the next League fixture, v. Leeds United on January 13th, 2006. This was the first time that a game had had to be postponed due to a relaid pitch being unready and the club was fined. The pitch size was 115 x 75 yards.
