The stadium was completed in 1928, the year that Thames FC was formed and took up residency. The arena, encompassing a football pitch and an oval track utilized for speedway and greyhound racing, was surrounded with large banks of concrete terracing and covered enclosures and seated stands were installed along both sides.
With a planned capacity of 120,000 it was one of the largest grounds utilized by a Football League club but this was never remotely tested with Thames FCs highest attendance of 8,275 only occupying 7% of the available capacity which is undoubtedly some sort of record. The club folded in 1932 and whilst the football matches were sparsely attended a crowd of 56,000 witnessed greyhound racing on August 4th, 1928 and an international speedway match between England and Australia attracted 64,000.
