GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Southend Athletic FC originally played here when the site was known as The Marine Park, but it was not until after WWI that the area was transformed into a large amusement park called The Kursaal. The football ground was on the east side of this park and more or less occupied the site of the former pitch. Initially the original pavilion, in the south east corner, was the only facility but a stand, on the east side, and concrete terracing along the other three sides were quickly constructed around the 115 x 75 yards sized pitch.

Southend United FC moved here from Roots Hall, played their first competitive match in 1919 and remained here until moving to Southend Stadium in 1934. Within two years the football ground was removed and, today, most of the whole amusement park has been redeveloped for housing.
