GROUND HISTORY

Located on the north side of Horsley Hill Road in the Westoe district, it had been used by a Rugby Union Club when South Shields FC moved here from Stanhope Road in 1908. Originally the only facility was a pavilion at the east end but by 1916 an open seated stand had been installed on the north side and a covered main stand and paddock on the south.
South Shields FC entered the Football League in 1919 and the ground was further improved with the construction of terracing, installation of cover over the east end and north side and extension of the main stand. The record attendance of 24,348 was set at the FA Cup 5th Round tie v. Swansea Town (2-2) on February 19th, 1927 and the club moved out to Redheugh Park where it re-formed as Gateshead FC. The ground was subsequently used by a local football team and substantially improved for the greyhound racing that took place until post war years when it was demolished and replaced by a bowling alley. The site was later used for housing.
