GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Constructed on a greenfield site, Reading FC moved to Madejski Stadium from Elm Park in 1998. It is a typical modern purpose-built all-seater stadium with a two-tier stand on the west side and a continuous cantilevered roof. At the start of the 2007/8 season the capacity was 24,200 with a 114 x 76 yards sized pitch.

Food & drink
Three Guineas bar has a good beer selection with friendly staff. Plenty of seating in and out the food is fine.

The Gateway 31 Greyfriars Road with the loss of the Malthouse is the next pub on a walking route to the ground the London Pride is usually OK (Β£3 pint) and the bar staff friendly enough. And its 200 yards from the station

Red Cow its 800 yards away from the station if you're looking for a real British gem of a pub come here. It's the genuine article the biggest fry up for Β£2, it can't be beat. Its a pub that will transport you back to the 1970’s

The Hop Leaf Pub at 163-165 Southampton Street why on earth this pub is not in the Good Beer Guide I do not know yet the ales is as good as ever. I go in every time I am back and am never disappointed by the quality of the ales - 6 Hop Back beers plus a Downton (this time their Imperial Stout at 9%) two of the them and your walking on air believe me
If driving
There are traffic jams if you use junction 11 so leave the M4 at Junction 12, bear left on to the A4 and go into Reading City Centre then at the Castle Hill roundabout take the second exit and follow the road to Sahara Bar then take the road to the right then follow the road to the Bridge Roundabout and then take the third exit onto the A329 and follow it on to the A33 relief road which leads you directly to the stadium. The Madejski Complex is well signposted from the A33 but the traffic is horrific on match days
Public transport
Walking to ground is a 2.56 mile walk according to Tom Toms. Meeting in the Three Guineas at the station then taking in The Gateway give you the stamina to get to the ground you can take the special buses but you might miss your train home if you take it back. So a 54 minute walk after the delight of those pubs then walk down Greyfriars Road then do a quick right cross the road and left into West Street which is soon St Mary Butt walk to the end of the road follow the traffic this will take you into Bridge Street, then follow the road to the roundabout under the motorway above then turn right at the church this will take you into Southampton Street and at the next junction stop at the Red Cow for a quick pint, across the junction and walk straight on into Whitley Street, at the next roundabout take a left past the Hindu temple (on the way back drop into Mr Cod (good food Editor and The Hop Pub), once past the garage continue down the Basingstoke Road on the left till you get to Jewson the next right into Bennet Road and go to the next roundabout go straight on at the roundabout into Northern way the ground is to your left.

Walk three minutes from Reading Station main entrance over to Station Stop ED and take the Reading Bus 6 to Whitley Wood, opp Bennet Road (on Basingstoke Road) then it’s go to the next roundabout go straight on at the roundabout into Northern Way the ground is to your left. And after the match walk back to the stop and on the return you can take the same bus back or walk to Northern Way and take the R1 back to the station they run every 15 minutes
