GROUND HISTORY adapted from "The Ultimate Directory of English & Scottish Football League Grounds"
Manchester City FC moved from Hyde Road on completion of the Maine Road ground in 1923. Sited on a former clay pit, it consisted of a 10,000 seat main stand on the east side and with the embankments around the remainder of the stadium had a nominal capacity of about 90,000. Terraces had been constructed during the period prior to the establishment of the record attendance of 84,569 at the FA Cup 6th Round tie v. Stoke City (1-0) on March 3rd, 1934 and just before WWII the main stand roof was extended around the corner and along the south side.

Further improvements were undertaken after the 1940s with the installation of seating at the south end and a roof on the east side. In 1971 a new 8,100 seat stand was opened at the north end and eleven years later the main stand was re-roofed. The 1990s saw the construction of two new stands, a 5,000 seater at the south end and an 11,010 seat three-tier structure on the east side. At the end of the 2001/2 season the all-seat capacity was 34,996 and the pitch size was 117 x 76 yards. In 2003 Manchester City vacated the stadium and it was demolished in 2004 and replaced by housing.
