The New Meadow stadium or Greenhous stadium is located just outside the town of Shrewsbury and construction was completed in 2007 after the club relocated from the Gay Meadow stadium, their home since 1910. The stadium is all seated and all covered with a capacity of just under 10,000. The New Meadow consists of 4 free standing (ie not attached) single tiered cantilevered stands all of the same height and design. The seats are blue with STFC spelled out in orange seats in all 4 stands. At either end of the ground are the 2,000 capacity home fans end the Salop Leisure, or South stand, and the 1800 seater away end the North or Pro Vision stand, which also houses a police control box. Running the length of either sides of the pitch are the 3,000 capacity Ron Wycherley or East stand, which also houses hospitality boxes, dressing rooms, dugouts the press/tv area and club shop and the 3500 seater Surridge or West stand. On top of these two stands are four floodlight pylons. The corners are empty though I suspect they could be filled with temporary seating for a big FA or League cup clash. Although the New Meadow could never be described as a classic, it looks like many other newer stadiums, it is a modern design and is perfectly adequate for a team from the lower leagues. The fact that the capacity is 10,000 means that the stadium looks well filled and has a good atmosphere, even if, as on this occasion, it is only just half full. This particular fixture was a bit special as it was Armed Forces Day and outside the stadium were various Army vehicle and weapon displays. However the highlight was having the match ball delivered into the stadium by helicopter! Now that''s something you don''t see every day. It landed in the centre circle and after delivering the ball hovered about 10 foot off the pitch, bowed to all four stands then headed off. Great stuff. Unfortunately the game didn''t quite come up to the standard of the pre match entertainment. With both teams in the wrong half of League One this was a cagey affair but Swindon took the lead in the 9th minute when Goddard headed in a right wing cross from Darnell (son of Paul) Furlong. Both sides could have scored before half time but it was Shrews Ivan Toney who equalised with a well taken goal on 44 minutes. Both keepers saved their team in the second half and Shrews Gary Deegan was sent off in the 88th minute for a second yellow. All in all an entertaining afternoon despite the fact it rained all day.
End of season 16/17- Shrewsbury Town finished 18th on 51 points. Sadly Swindon finished 22nd on 44 points and were relegated to League Two along with Port Vale, Coventry and Chesterfield.
